Check-in on the Checkoff: Your Mental Health Matters

As a farmer, I know firsthand the challenges and pressures we face every day—whether it’s unpredictable weather, fluctuating markets, or the daily demands of running a farm. These stresses can take a toll on our mental health, and while we’re tough and resilient by nature, it’s important to recognize that it’s okay to seek help when things feel overwhelming. September is Suicide Awareness Month and the start of harvest, which had me thinking about our mental health as we prepare for this season as farmers.
As the Iowa Corn Promotion Board President, I want to use my platform to advocate for farmers in all manners. Mental health awareness is something that’s often overlooked in rural communities, but it’s just as important as physical health – especially while prepping for the demand of harvest season. The stigma around talking about mental health has kept many of us silent, but that’s starting to change, thanks in part to organizations like the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. They recognize that mental well-being is critical to our success on the farm and have made it a priority to connect farmers with the resources we need to be our best selves.
Through Iowa Corn, there are several mental health resources available, including hotlines and local support groups that understand the unique challenges we face. They’re sharing organizations that offer counseling services and even workshops that teach stress management and coping skills. These resources are confidential, easy to access, and designed to fit into our busy lives as corn growers.
It’s encouraging to see Iowa Corn stepping up to support farmers beyond just our crops and markets. By acknowledging the importance of mental health, they’re helping ensure that we can continue to thrive, not just as farmers, but as individuals and families. No one should have to face these challenges alone, and with Iowa Corn, we don’t have to.
