Iowa Corn Spring Planting

The spring weather in Iowa has been one made for knocking on wood. Sunshine and a few sprinkles are what a possible record corn crop in Iowa is made with. Of course, Mother Nature is in charge of what lies ahead, but so far, this spring is one for the history books.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, reported on May 3rd: “With 84 percent of corn and 13 percent of soybeans planted, Iowa farmers continue to get the 2010 crop into the ground at a record pace,” Northey said.  “While heavy rains and severe weather limited progress in some parts of the state, over all conditions this spring have been very favorable.”

The weekly crop report is available on the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s website at www.IowaAgriculture.gov or on USDA’s site at www.nass.usda.gov/ia.
